With over 24 years industry experience, Hilton Sinclair has gained vast experience living and working in South Africa, the United Kingdom, New York, and Sydney. Studying and sourcing materials, and innovative design and building practices from all over the world. He has worked alongside many of Sydney’s top architects and designers such as Hare + Klein.

In 2002 he founded Hilton Residential and has consistently demonstrated his ability to deliver high-end homes loaded with detailed craftsmanship and beautiful design elements. His goal has always been to transform ideas and dreams into reality, delivering building projects to highest standard and quality finish.

With a background in detailed joinery from Sotheby’s New York and passion for furniture design and architecture, there’s no surprise these design disciplines have such an impact on his signature building style.

When we first met with Hilton rather than start talking about what he could do for us he really wanted to take the time to understand what we wanted to achieve with our new family home. Hilton wanted to know exactly what has important to us and how we wanted to the house to look and feel. He absorbs the information and starts bouncing ideas straight away, which made us feel comfortable that he could design and build a great family home for us.

We only had a basic layout plan when we first met and at that point we had considered engaging an architect and interior designer as well as we wanted a great result. After a couple of meetings we decided to only engage Hilton to design our house and not use an architect and interior designer which was the best decision we made on the whole project. We did this because we felt he understood exactly what we wanted and was able to translate our ideas into an actual design. He didn't just push his ideas onto us he found out what was important to us and then came up with options to choose from that we'd have never thought of. Hilton puts a lot of his personal energy into the design, you can tell by the time he puts into it and the number of good ideas that he comes up with that he's really passionate about designing something special. Each element of the design was carefully considered and every decision from feature walls to bathroom tiles was made as a team between Hilton and us so there were no bad surprises along the way. He really engaged us in the build but you got the sense you could just give him the keys and leave him to it.

During the build Hilton was very hands on. He is across every detail of the build and was directing every trade down to the finest detail. He knows exactly when to co-ordinate his trades and takes time to plan the job from start to finish. Whilst we were blown away with how quickly he completed the project he still gave us lots of time to make decisions and in some cases we could see samples installed before we had to make a decision. He was involved in every design decision right down to the light fittings and if we weren't 100% on a design he could sense it and the next day he always seemed to come up with someone better. He is a great communicator with his clients and gave us a lot of time to make big decisions, in some cases months.

We always looked forward to coming to site so see the progress and the work site was always busy. Hilton's teamwork hard and we were impressed by the high standards of every trade. Over the 6 months of the project we didn't lose a single day to weather because Hilton had thought of everything so there was always work to be done. Nothing seemed to phase Hilton and when changes needed to be made he had a solution right away. Hilton was conscious of our budget and was very open about costs. He advised us on items that we should spend money on and other areas where some savings could be made. He provided breakdowns of all of the financials and you can tell he runs a good operation with everything he does.

With the house finished we couldn't be happier with the final result. On the last days of the build Hilton was into everything from directing finishing trades to lending a hand with the landscaping. He'll do whatever it takes to get the job done right. We love every room of the house and looking at the fine details reminds of the time he spent on each little aspect of the house. He's transformed the house into a light and airy beach house which has a natural and relaxed feel. He created a number of different spaces throughout the house and put every inch of the block inside and out to good use. It's incredible how his design ideas come to life months later exactly as he explains them. I think his design skills make him a great builder and his building skills make him great designer. Without Hilton we wouldn't have ended up with the house we love today and we recommend him to anyone who really cares about having a quality finished home with lots of personal touches.

Hilton completed a rear extension on our home earlier this year. We went through the tendering process for the job with 6 builders. We chose Hilton because he listened and took the time to understand what we wanted to achieve. The costs he proposed were similar to other builders but his approach gave us confidence that we were working together in a partnership.

The renovation took approximately 4 months to complete. During this time Hilton communicated openly and was able to suggest alternatives or creative solutions to any issues that arose. He was patient with first time renovators and took the time to explain things to help us make decisions along the way. Hilton and his team were a happy bunch who were very easy to get along with and seem to really enjoy their work. They were always polite, trustworthy and diligent. The quality of their work is of a high standard. We are very happy with the end result of our renovation and would recommend Hilton and his team to any prospective customers.

The rear extension was a big, exciting project. Firstly we demolished the old kitchen, dining and sheds/ external laundry/ toilet, then lay the foundations for the new kitchen, dining, lounge, bathroom and internal laundry. The design was certainly different, with 5m high pitched roof/ ceilings, timber cladding and steel beams everywhere – but Hilton was willing and able to take on the challenge. I am amazed at what can be accomplished with the right organisation skills and natural ability!

Hilton was always punctual, organised ahead of time and offered guidance at every step. Being a first time renovator, Hilton made the whole experience less stressful than I anticipated by communicating everything as it was happening. His estimate was cost conscious but realistic – we didn’t go over our top end budget which was a bonus (even when I did choose the more expensive timber flooring). Hilton is a perfectionist when it comes to small details, checking every tiny detail. He is also a great (creative) problem solver and took a real interest in final finishes which helped to make it the beautiful home it is today. He’s an easy going, hard-working, honest builder who takes real pride in making sure the dream comes to life. I have no hesitation in recommending Hilton for any building projects.

Hilton and his team built our dream terrace in 2012 in an unbelievable short time frame of 10 weeks. No one around us could believe how quickly they turned the job around whilst always maintaining the highest standards and professionalism. There are houses in our street being built by other builders who started before we did and are still yet to be completed. Hilton was always extremely helpful, offered ongoing advice, saved us time & money and was always available to meet up whenever we required. We have only good things to say about Hilton and his team. Our previous builder left us in a real mess – after 18 months of chaos – with a half renovated kitchen and a damaged and leaking upstairs bathroom. We didn’t know where to go but luckily Hilton came and had a look. He worked out the structural problems and fixed them within a week – not easy to do in a 150 year old terrace house. That’s when we knew we could trust him so we engaged him to do a major basement renovation. The project involved substantial excavation by hand, extensive underpinning of foundations and installation of proper drainage to prevent water ingress. Hilton and his staff had the whole thing done in 4 months laying polished concrete floors with subfloor heating, a full kitchen with new plumbing and a stylish modern bathroom as well as cutting in four new windows. We could hardly believe the pace and high standard of work after our previous building nightmare. And we kept ticking all the boxes as the work progressed – proper consultation with intelligent and practical building advice and guidance based on experience. Quality materials, building work and tradesmen. A co-ordinated and efficient team who were on site on time every day without delay, stalling or running off to other projects. Pleasant and mutually respectful relations not only with Hilton but all his employees and tradesmen throughout the whole thing. Plus respect for our property and privacy. And I should also say – all for a fair price too. Now we have a whole new self contained floor in our home which has already rented to overseas travelers. Plus a finished kitchen and an upstairs bathroom that’s now waterproof and looks as good as new. We’ll be getting him back for the next phase of our building.
